4 more minutes on the run and you would have made it. But now your face in the mud, and a knee in your back the officer reads your rights. “Chosen by lottery, informed within the time limit. You are hearby duly sworn as the President of the United States.”

The Strange Case Of The Amateur Detective

At some point, surely someone must notice the pattern… right? Note: Beginning slightly edited for clarity.

It took a while, but I’ve convinced Maggie to tell me when she goes out of town. I’ll feel better, I say, if I know for sure where she is when a body makes the news.

Which is true, of course. The sheer frequency with which that little lunatic does it keeps me awake at nights. But it also enables me to take certain precautions.

Like this one.

“Hello, Branford County Police Station, Constable Ford speaking.”

“Hello, Constable Ford, this is Detective Inspector Winsbury. I’m going to need to speak to whoever is in charge there about a possible murder.”

As usual, there was some back and forth at that point, but eventually I got through to an Inspector. “What do you mean, a possible murder?!” he asked, irritated.

“Just what I said. Tell me, Inspector, have you ever had dealings with an amateur detective? The real thing, I mean. The genuine Carrion Crow.”

His tone went from hostile to guarded. “I’ve… heard some things. Never met one.”

“You’re about to. Mine’s visiting Branford, ostensibly to see an old school friend, and I wouldn’t bet you the price of a beer that she’s not going to show up to report a murder within a few days.”

“You can’t possibly - “

“Her count’s at fourteen, to my certain knowledge.”

*squinting* Zuko?

Never over the way Turlough’s arc just reenacts the Doctor’s character arc over his first three lifetimes in a slightly altered order.

  • Child of a corrupt society, ending up at odds with them
  • (and even though this wasn’t canon at the time, please note Listen’s “doesn’t want to be a soldier” next to Turlough having some kind of military rank but being accused of “still running away.” And being characterized as “running away” in general, of course)
  • Exiled to Earth (under the Brigadier’s supervision), hates it there and stews about having to live among a bunch of humans (Three)
  • When we meet him, is motivated by desperation and self-interest, shows little regard for others’ welfare, and in fact tries to kill a man by braining him with a rock (One)
  • Gradual process of learning to have friends and embrace his better impulses (One)
  • Lying, refusing to talk about himself, and acting like he wants to go home while also desperately afraid of his own people (One & Two)
  • On landing in a situation where a number of innocent people are going to die (and it’s partly his people’s responsibility), he sacrifices his freedom by calling his people in to rescue the innocents, accepting that he will no longer be able to hide from them (LITERALLY War Games)

No offense to modern Doctor Who but why does every companion stay in the TARDIS until some horrible life altering thing forces them to leave (death, trapped in a parallel universe, memories forcibly taken, etc.). I miss how in Classic Who most companions just said “Hey Doc, this has been fun but I think it’s time I went home” or “hey this planet is pretty cool, I think I’m going to stay here” and the Doctor was just like “okay cool, I’ll always remember you fondly, bye!”
